Desert Eye

“Esphand” Kashan

Just into my 6th week traveling in Iran. Here is an Interior detail from historical house in Kashan.
I have a love for “Esphand”  (also meaning end of February and second half of march – the last month before new year) it also has a relationship to the evil eye concept. Such seeds may be burned to ward of evil. They are made differently many villages in Iran. This is by far the largest and most magnificent I have ever seen, about 3.5 m long and positioned over a fireplace. For me it is particularly symbolic of Iran, desert winds and power.
